Dear Parents,

I hope the attached slideshow gives you some sense of the events of these past two weeks.
Our visit to the 7th Grade Colonial Museum was instructive and engrossing. It was a treat to be in the Learning Commons where there was not only room to move comfortably but the acoustics allowed for successful communication!

In Social Studies we have been focusing on certain vocabulary words from our Kids Discover reading and this final matching/concentration game seemed a fun way to finish up. Perceive, nationality and manipulate seemed the toughest at first, but I think we finally got them all.

In ELA we have begun reading Maniac Magee and will be focusing on comprehension, vocabulary and literary techniques. They were particularly connected to our beginning Poetry Unit, but I think this is the book to move them on to prose. I hope those of you that were able to come for last weeks’ Poetry Assembly were able to see what a real connection each student made with the magic of poetry and poetic language.

Starting tomorrow, I will be sending home finished homework and classwork in new folders.
I am asking the students to reflect back on their work and to hand in written responses to their completed work, choosing one or two pieces that were important, challenging and/or fun for them and why. This will be the start of a portfolio of the years work along with reinforcing my emphasis on self-reflection and the importance that it plays in learning.

Also, after break would be a good time to send in a set of dry clothes for cubbies- dry socks in particular. An extra set of dry pants or leggings would be helpful too.

I hope to see some of you tomorrow at Thanksgiving soup, but if not- I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Best Katharine
