The weather has certainly turned a chilly corner this week! Despite our biggest wishes, it is time for sweaters and socks.
On Tuesday, we celebrated Gabriel’s Name Day! In Portugal, where Gabriel and Olivia’s grandmother is from, families celebrate one another’s Name Day or Saint’s Day. This is a day when his family honors and celebrates him as a member of their family, much like a birthday. Carmen joined us for Morning Meeting where we learned about the Portuguese custom of decorating and painting roosters in bright colors to bring good luck. After lunch we had banana muffins, which were made by Olivia and her mother. YUMMY! Later in the morning we introduced the character Bouncy Ben from Letterland. Bouncy Ben lives in Letterland with his brothers who ride in a blue boat and a hot air balloon. Ben is a happy bunny rabbit who loves to bounce and balance things. He balances a blue ball on his head between his big brown ears.
Wednesday, we were very “bubbly” and we did blue bubble painting, using straws, soap bubbles and blue water color paint. We also had a scavenger hunt looking for things in our room that were blue or had a /b/ sound at the b
eginning. Thankfully, Mrs. Heady had indoor gym. The wind was really blowing!
Even with the excitement of the fire drill on Thursday, we had the time to learn how to write Bouncy Ben’s lower case shape “b.” We also glued buttons on his letter. Some of the children even made repeated patterns. We loved looking through the bowls of beautiful buttons! We also have a basket of objects that begin with Bouncy Ben’s sound. Included in the basket is a bucket and 3 balls. In the afternoon, the children made a game of tossing the little balls into the bucket. We also used our tiny counting bears to compare on a balance.
On Friday, we used water colors to paint blotter paper leaves. The children enjoyed watching the colors flow together to make new colors. They are now hanging in the windows of the Pre K room. After Library, we took a walk to the BCD garden to check on the progress of the vegetables. We saw squash, big cucumbers, celery, potatoes, brussel sprouts and carrots. Our favorite discoveries were the herbs, which we did sample. We smelled chocolate mint, lemon mint, lavender and parsley. We also discovered some sunflower seeds on the head of a dried out sunflower.
