It has been wonderful getting back into the routine of learning together after a relaxing Winter Break … although we are still waiting for the winter. The children spoke of fun times with their families, but have eagerly and excitedly jumped back into all that we are doing together in the classroom.
In English, the students have recently finished The Best / Worst Christmas Pageant Ever. They enjoyed the story and especially the antics of the often naughty Herdman children. They enjoyed this aspect of the story so much that they are writing a “missing chapter” from the book where they are including themselves and some of their classmates in further misadventures. The students will be writing, editing, typing and sharing their chapters with the class. I look forward to seeing where their imaginations take them!
In math, we’ve just finished a unit on area, perimeter and the study of basic polygons. We are now delving fully into learning how to multiply two and three digit numbers. We will be using manipulatives to help the students better understand visually how to multiply multi-digit numbers.
The class as a whole is very excited about beginning their first State Project. Each student has selected a state that is east of the Mississippi River, and will research important people, places and historical events from their state. The project will culminate with the creation of a poster highlighting their discoveries that they will present to the class. We will begin in earnest on the research portion of the project on Monday.
As the winter season kicks into full gear (despite the mild weather,) Ski Friday began today and will continue weekly as per the schedule put forth by Ms. Benner. I also want to thank the parents for helping to make our Holiday Party that happened on the last day of school before Winter Break a huge success! Everybody truly enjoyed the treats and having an opportunity to spend a little time together before vacation.
