Today, the school gathered around BCD’s Peace Pole during our annual tradition of celebrating the International Day of Peace (September 21). The BCD Peace Pole has the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” inscribed in three languages: French, Spanish, and Mandarin. BCD is one of tens of thousands of communities in 180 different countries to erect a pole as constant reminder for us to visualize and pray for world peace.
Students in Grade 3 opened the gathering by planting their Pinwheels of Peace and sharing their thoughts on what the word “peace” meant: “Peace is when I am in my room imagining”, “Peace is when we all get along”, “If there is no peace, the world would blow up.”
Students in Grades 7 and 8 shared a poem with us while the Vertical Grade 1-2 classroom added to a Peace Mural they began last year. Kindergarteners shared their Peace Wheel with thoughts on what was needed to have peace: nature, food, a house, family. The Sixth Graders created a Peace Poster which included their thoughts on peace: “Peace opens a door to happiness”, “Peace is no longer being afraid”, “Peace is when people reflect on their emotions in the right way”, “Peace starts from within, but will not grow if it isn’t shared”. Ninth Graders expressed “Peace” in a different language.
Finally, our lower school students taught us all a song about peace that they had learned in chorus. It was a beautiful assembly!
