It seems that our classroom full of snowflakes is finally having an effect on the weather outside. It’s great to see that winter has finally come to the Berkshires! Despite the excitement of snow, the class is very engaged in learning in all areas of our curriculum.
The students are very busy in math. We are wrapping up two-digit multiplication and will be wading into the world of division in the coming days. The skills the children have been mastering in multiplication will prove invaluable as we begin our exploration of multiplication’s opposite operation.
We are continuing to enjoy our “read aloud” of There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom. The story is about a new boy in a fifth grade class who has a very defensive personality. He does not wish to let anyone into his world, so he chooses to be “an island” unto himself. The story explores how his behavior affects the others in the class, and how it ultimately resolves for the betterment of all. It has sparked some terrific class discussions about coping with differences and being a friend. The children have been very introspective during our conversations, and have gotten a lot of real life value from this experience.
In social studies, the students have completed their research on their state poster projects, and will be creating their posters this week. We will begin our in class share of the posters next week. Be on the look out for photos on next week’s blog entry of the posters!
