This afternoon over one-hundred students participated in BCD’s afterschool sports and theater co-curricular programs. Four soccer fields were brimming with over ninety students – the Farm Team played an intramural game and the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams practiced. * Nine students went to the Winthrop Theater, excited about their rehearsal of “Rhinoceros” by Eugene Ionesco and their upcoming performances for the community on Saturday, November 5th and Sunday, November 6th.
Participation in these co-curricular programs is integral to the Middle and Upper School experience at Berkshire Country Day School. These programs provide essential learning opportunities and exercises for the body and mind after the school day ends at three o’clock. At BCD, our fields, theater, and band room provide extensions to the classroom experiences of students. Each student is challenged and meaningfully engaged through collaboration with teammates, fellow actors, musicians, directors, and coaches. Each venue develops specific skills and emphasizes essential character traits and values such as responsibility, inclusivity, commitment, perseverance, and cooperation.
I am appreciative of the talent and commitment of our coaches Tim Gore, Sarah Pitcher Hoffman, Mike McCarthy, Starr Nader, Joni Olsen, Geoff Perkins, Jeff Uhas, Alexis Watts, and Sandy Wojtkowski, as well as Theater and Film Director Amy Brentano and Athletic Director Sue Benner.
End-of-the-day pick up was abuzz with tired and happy children. Parents were checking in with one another and enjoying the magnificent fall afternoon. I am pleased to see so many children fully involved in the life of the school. I look forward to the continued engagement of our students as they reap the benefits of our co-curricular program offerings during the winter and spring.
* The Varsity girls host a soccer tournament at BCD this Saturday, October 22, and the Varsity boys host another tournament on Saturday, October 29.
