2nd grade January work 017

Dear Parents,

I know you join me in welcoming our new student in 2nd grade, Omar.
The class has really risen to the occasion and is doing a great job of showing him around our classroom and our school. It has been a great opportunity for us to model our best behavior and manners.

This week in Social Studies we have started our study of maps and atlases and all of the related vocabulary and concepts that go with it. Map scale, legends/keys, continents, equator, compass rose, longitude and latitude, are just some of the new ideas we’ve been working with.

We’ve also begun our study of money, coins and currency in math class. Making change is a great extension of all our work with chip trading and adding and subtracting. I have a pretty good collection of coins but if you could send in a small ziploc bag with approximately $2 worth of coins that would be helpful.

We have also begun a project in Language Arts class whereby each student chooses a character from a book they have read and write a letter asking a minimum of 3 questions about their activities in the story. Understanding and questioning the motives of fictional characters proves to be a terrific creative outlet and starts them thinking like the real authors they are learning to become.

Due to such cold temperatures we have only had one outside recess this week and no one goes out with hat and gloves as you can see above and in the slide show below!

Best,

Katharine
