One of the joys of working with third graders is their blossoming ability to understand nuances in speech and action. This week’s library sessions provided an opportunity for students to engage in the subtleties of language while synthesizing some of what they have learned about literary genres and books. For this activity, students were given cards on which were written various genres (mystery, non-fiction, fantasy, etc.) or library-based vocabulary (overdue, renew, spine, etc). Without mentioning the word, the students had to describe to the group what was on the card either verbally or using their bodies. They could not speak the word written on the card. This activity, not only demonstrated the third graders’ mastery of content, but also their excitement for dramatic play. Lastly, we concluded with browsing and check-out time. Books are due on 10.15.10. Happy reading!
