Dear Parents,

The slideshow below illustrates how much fun we had up at the BCD shop making our Colonial tin lanterns. The class got right to work using the hammers, nails and vices to create whatever pattern they chose to let the light come through.
Next week we will begin final written projects including hornbooks and our names written in Colonial Penmanship with quill pens.

Although a new spelling list will be going home on Tuesday, the quiz for those words (o vowel teams; oa, -ow,-oe) will be in two weeks time on Friday, November 22nd.

In Math, we continue to use fraction games to supplement formal instruction. These games help the students not only gain speed and accuracy in recall but support their ability to move from visualization to symbolic representation.
As some of you know from recent homework assignments, I also continue to develop pattern recognition and particularly enjoy discussing strategies and experiences in how puzzles were solved at home. I appreciate your involvement with those assignments, as working them out with a parent or a sibling increases their use of reasoning skills.

Thank you for taking the time to come in for conferences and if you were not able to schedule one please know I am available whenever you might want to come in. I hope I was able to convey how much I enjoy teaching each of your children, how unique and talented they all are. I think we are off to a great start to 2nd grade.

Enjoy the three day weekend and see you next week,

Katharine
