Greetings 2nd grade parents,

First packets of 2nd grade were sent home today. I reminded the students to take a few moments and review the work they have done with you….the things they enjoyed, things that were challenging, etc. It’s a great way for them to start feeling ownership of their work, that it has value and that it represents their effort in the classroom. You might need to get the conversation going with some questions, for example, ” What makes a Melinark, what makes a Glig?” “What is this purple pattern on your number grid?” Perhaps a 2nd grade box at home will help though I realize some of it will head to the recycle bin at some point! Please help the the children to remember to bring back the empty envelope the next day so we can refill it each week.

Everyone’s homework was in on time, some even a day early, that’s a great start. Thanks for your help and support with laying the groundwork for these  important routines and habits.

In the classroom  we are just finishing up some of the projects  we have been working on since the start of the school year;  September calendars, Acrostic poems and finally our Hopes and Dreams for the year ahead. Completing our Hopes and Dreams  will pave the way for establishing classroom rules next week so that we can make our dreams come true.

The ‘Me Box” starts on Monday. Our Social Studies curriculum begins with this way of getting to know what is special about each and everyone of us before we can start learning about other people and other cultures. Names are chosen in no special order, the box goes home with that student who chooses 10 items to put in the box, photo’s, (xeroxed photos are fine) souveneirs, small toys, postcards, etc., whatever is special to them. A pencil can represent a love of writing, and some sheet music can represent a love of music for example. Further directions are taped inside the box. Even if the child isn’t selected that day I recommend you start gathering or planning what items might go in it so you’re ready when called!

I hope to see you here next Monday for Back to School Night, but if you’re not able to make it, I will be doing be calls and/or emails check-ins to make sure things are going smoothly and positively for your child. There’s been an enormous amount of learning going on already and I can’t wait to continue discovering all that is unique and wonderful about this special class.

I usually try to attach a slide show of some candid shots, but haven’t amassed quite enough yet, will send some photos on soon!

Best,

Katharine
