Dear Parents,
The Poetry Cafe was a big success. We had a small celebration afterwards and a good time was had by all. I will be posting a video separately of our readers…thank you Ms. Rossie!
We finished up our ‘Me Box’ this afternoon and discussed how much we learned about each other that we never knew before. After every ‘Me’ Box presentation the comments all start with, “I never knew that…….”.
We will begin our study of Colonial Times next week in Social Studies class and take our first class trip to Sturbridge Village on Thursday, October 3rd. I will send home a sheet with more detailed information about the trip next week.
If you have not yet visited Sturbridge Village, it is recreation of a ‘typical’ New England town of the early 19th century. Authentically costumed Villagers demonstate and discuss the daily life and work of the times. We will visit as many of the buildings as times permits including the Grist Mill, the Tin Shop, the Sawmill, the Blacksmith shop and the School House. The class also enjoys a hands-on studio activity with an instructor. It’s an all day trip, leaving at 8:15 back in time for dismissal. Please pack lunch and snack as usual. Perhaps an extra snack for the ride home as well. Mrs. Malloy will be our additional chaperone.
Next week in Reading class we will break into two groups and Mrs. Clausen and I will begin to work on comprehension, phonics and grammar as we read from different literary genres.
Just a reminder to send in some extra socks for the cubbies if you haven’t already. In Math class we continue to concentrate on looking for patterns with numbers, working with our 100’s chart, cuisinaire rods and other math games. We are working to make our addition facts as automatic as possible so we can move on and build from there. Any chance you have to reinforce addition math facts( going up or down the number line by 5’s, 2’s or 10’s also works) at home or in the car, please do, the practice is very helpful. We’re concentrating on doubles, (7+7, 8+8, etc.) as they are so helpful in getting us to compute other sums.
Hope to see some of you at the Apple Squeeze this weekend, if not enjoy the time with your families wherever you might be!
