Second Graders visiting the library used penguins as a thematic point of departure to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction books. We began by sharing Helen Lester’s Tacky in Trouble, in which Tacky (the eccentric penguin) finds himself stranded in the tropics and must use his creativity and wits to return to Antarctica . For contrast, we then explored National Geographic Society’s March of the Penguins which details the nesting and caregiving cycles of Emperor penguins. Using both fiction and non-fiction books as reference guides, we then used Model Magic clay to sculpt our own “fact” and “fantasy” penguins. Stop by the library to view our penguin friends on display this week. Happy Reading!
