Greetings!

Since my last blog post about Grade 2, students have finished their pond study unit and engaged in a short study of the food chain. We read a great book called Pass the Energy Please! The book brought up a lot of conversation from the children. Some students felt bad for the animals in the book that got eaten, but all were able to understand that this is the nature of Nature, and of life.

We’ve now started our unit on Rocks and Minerals. I told the students not to be fooled – that rocks may seem boring, but that they are really super exciting, lively and interesting! We spent a day talking about characteristics of rocks like texture, size, color and shape. I asked students to look at a collection of rocks and complete the sentences “Some rocks are …..” and “All rocks are ….”. The last statement caused a lot of discussion, which was great.

During our last class I introduced students to Igneous rocks. (Igneous rock is melted rock that bubbles up from inside the earth, then cools down to form hard rock.) In order for students to really remember this, we made a very messy volcano in our classroom. Students then drew in pictures how igneous rock forms.
