For the past three weeks, second-grade has enjoyed a read-aloud of Andrew Clements’ novel, Frindle. This popular story about a fifth grader who invents a new word for pen (frindle!) and sees what happens when his word becomes a national sensation is one that resonates with students because of its narrative style and realistic characters. Teachers love this book because it touches upon the ever-changing nature of language and the sometimes arbitrary relationship that exists between the form and meaning of a word. We conducted our own Frindle experiment by coming up with new words for every day objects…
GROPILE means chair. (Tait)
Snozzerang means boomerang (Charles)
Falla means pencil (Cooper)
Ooshyblablah means to highlight (Colby)
Zentan means flower (Anna Claire)
Nana means friend (Ghaday)
Focusart means karate (Beck)
Burralo means hat (Shayna)
Furryguy means monkey (Gabe)
Toetoe means huge blanket (Roberto)
Sploosh means horse (Anna Claire)
Zylenof means food (Jesse)
Foobleck means nice monster (Amanda)

We did an anonymous vote of our favorites….Burralo, Foobleck, Gropile and Falla were the big winners today!

Library concluded with book browsing and check-out. Happy Reading!
