Today in the library, we took inspiration from the animals of West Africa. We shared two stories. Our first, Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock retold by Eric Kimmel, centers around Anansi the spider who discovers a strange moss-covered rock with magic powers. Anansi takes advantage of the rock’s magic to trick his friends, Lion, Elephant, Giraffe and Zebra. The little Bush Deer, however, will not be fooled and uses the rock to teach Anansi a lesson. Our second African tale, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears, is a Caldecott-Award winning book by Verna Aardema. With its beautiful batik-style illustrations, this story shows how miscommunication can cause a world of confusion. Both tales stress the importance of loyalty and honesty.

Please check your home libraries for BCD library books! Next Friday is our last library class. Happy Reading!
