Today in the library, preschool students and their special friends were  introduced to one of the most beloved archetypes in Russian folklore–Baba Yaga, a grandmotherly witch  who, in Patricia Polacco’s tale, Babuskha and Baba Yaga, just wants to be loved, not feared. The message (Don’t judge a person by her appearance) is easily understood, and enhanced by Polacco’s colorful illustrations and folk art references.  To tie in with our Grandparents’ Day theme, we shared a second book, Lucky Pennies and Hot Chocolate

.  Told from a grandfather’s point of view, this book highlights some of the quiet moments we share with our grandparents and special friends. Lastly, students had a choice of making a matrioshka (nesting doll) inspired bookmark, or coloring pictures of Russian images. Special thanks to all of the guests for coming to the library today! Happy Reading.
