Today in the library, Pre-K students discussed book care. For our storytime, I brought out my ragged (but beloved copy) of The House on East 88th Street by Bernard Weber. Students made the following observations: “The book is really old,”; “Someone didn’t take care of it,”; “Someone drew with crayon in the book,”; “The cover is torn,”; “Someone loved the book very much;”. All of these were indeed true, and I shared that very fact with the students to illustrate a point that books can look worn from being loved or from being mistreated, and we can still learn to take care of book even after it is worn. After I read the story of how the lovable Lyle the Crocodile came to live with the Primm family in Manhattan, we made bookmarks to take home. The students decorated their bookmarks with markers and stickers. Please take a moment to reinforce book care with your child when you see the bookmark. Whether your book is from the BCD, public or your home library, every book needs some love!
