Hi Everyone,

Friday was such an incredible day filled with joy, laughter and love!  In the morning, we worked together with the B3 class to make apple muffins.  Once again we used our apple peeler, corer slicer.  Everyone helped add all of the ingredients and mix the batter.  Our rooms smelled so delicious.  We shared our special treats with our guests after lunch.  It was such a gift to observe the children’s eyes light up when their Grandparents and Grand Friends joined us.  Equally as bright were the smiles on the faces of our special guests.  When our guests first arrived, we greeted them by singing some of the songs we have been singing each morning.  As these are some old favorites, quite a few voices chimed in.  What a surprise for all to see that they knew some of the same songs!  Next, the B3 students led their grandparents into their classroom.  After sharing what we do during Morning Meeting, everyone was invited to explore all of our learning centers and make a fall wreath.  We hope they enjoyed their special gifts.  All week long we have been reading stories about grandfathers and grandmothers.  Readings these books has influenced the children to share many loving stories and memories of time spent with their grandparents throughout the week.  Thank you to all of you who were able to join us and please, visit again, soon!

Dippy Duck was our new friend from Letterland this week.  Instead of quacking, Dippy says “d-d-d!”  He lives at the duckpond where he likes to dip in the water and dive down deep.  The pond is surrounded by daisies and daffodils.  Dippy is also friends with the deer, a dog and a donkey.  Next week we will meet Eddie Elephant.

On Monday the children had their first Pre K experience with finger painting.  Each of them started out by choosing red, blue or yellow.  After swirling that about for a bit, they were invited to select one more color.  Each of them made predictions as to what would happen when the new color was added.  As they worked they remarked at how the finger paint felt in their fingers.  “It feels slippery.”  “It’s shiny.”  “I can see my hand print!”

We also talked about what it means to trace around something.  We practiced tracing around our hands.  While the children worked, I traced around each of their bodies.  Later in the day they used brayers to paint their silhouettes.  We wanted to hang them in the classroom to surprise our special guests.  They look fantastic!

On Thursday, October 18th, we will join the Kindergarten class for a trip to Ioka Valley Farm in Hancock.  We will travel by bus and will leave BCD at 9:15a.m.  We will have an early snack before we board the bus.  Once at the farm, we will visit the petting zoo, go on a hay ride to the pumpkin patch, select a pumpkin to take home and have some time to play on their playground.  We will also bring our lunches to eat at the farm.  Please be sure that your child is dressed for walking about a farm and spending the morning outdoors.  Pants, sturdy shoes and layers work great.  Regarding lunches, please be sure to send forks, spoons and water bottles.  We will not be able to heat anything up in the microwave.

We will celebrate Halloween on Wednesday, October 31st.  On this day, children are invited to wear their costumes to school.  Costumes should be easy to put on and allow children to move about freely.  Please do not send irreplaceable accessories, as we cannot ensure that they will return home in the same condition that they arrive.  We know that the children may have other events to attend.  In addition, please refrain from allowing children to bring any pretend weapons, masks, or overly scary costumes.  Weapons are against classroom policy and  masks hinder vision and coordination.

Our Class Parent, Amy Elmore will be helping us organize Halloweeny treats.  A sign-up sheet will be posted in the coat room next week.  We will have a “trick-filled” Morning Meeting and then we will go on our annual Halloween Parade around the BCD campus.  Parents are welcome to join us for the parade.  Once we return to the classrooms and we say good-bye to parents, we will have our own celebration with special Halloween activities.  Special treats will be served for snack time and after lunch.  Please be sure to send in a set of clothes in a labeled bag for your child to change into whenever he or she is ready.  This should be a fun-filled morning!

Important Reminders:

  • Preschool goes outdoors each day.  Please be sure children have sweaters or coats as the mornings are often chilly.
  • Please replenish extra clothes when necessary.  Children should have a full set of clothing, including socks, undergarments, shirts and pants.
  • Leaving a sweatshirt or sweater for days that may be chilly indoors may help your child feel more comfortable.
  • It is a good idea for children who wear dresses to also wear shorts or leggings.
Please be sure to send in a refillable drink container for us to fill with water.  In our efforts to be green, we try to refrain from using plastic cups.
  • Please be sure to send appropriate flatware in your child’s lunch.
  • Including a variety of snack items is encouraged for young growing children.
  • If your child needs to have an item warmed up, please be sure it is in a microwave safe container.
  • Leaving an extra pair of sneakers or other shoes in school is a good idea.
