Hi Everyone,
Spring is here! Things are greening up and growing all around us. Mother Earth is awakening her “Root Children.” We have taken advantage of the weather and spent as much time as possible exploring the campus gardens and grounds.
The children continue to wait with great anticipation for their bean seeds to sprout. We have also planted an orange seed and an apple seed. The children are amazed at how tall their grass has grown. On Friday, they drew pictures of their grass pots using the colors that they observed, ie…green for the grass, brown or black for the soil and white, yellow or gray for the roots. On Monday, we will measure how tall the grass is using Unifix Cubes. While they worked, we talked about what they were observing, such as what color their grass was and how tall it was. They also noticed that the roots of the grass through the plastic cup. After a few days, we will measure our grass again.
On Monday morning we visited BCD’s Art Show in Fitzpatrick Hall. There were sculptures, ceramic creations, collages, drawings, graphic images, sketches, prints and paintings. The beautiful master pieces inspired us to create our own art. We drew with pencils on watercolor paper and then painted designs on our pictures. We have displayed them for you to enjoy.
On Wednesday, we celebrated Caroline’s Star Day. Her mom, Tyler, her dad, Chris, and her older brother Charles joined us for Morning Meeting. She also has an older sister, Lily, who is 12 years old. Caroline’s photo board was decorated with pictures of she and her family at her grandmother’s house in Maine, where she loves to collect shells. We also saw pictures of Caroline when she was a tiny baby. She had lots of hair!
We learned that when she was a baby, she smiled all the time. Now that she is older, she enjoys drawing and dancing. Charles read us one of Caroline’s favorite stories about a pig and a moose, “The Ballad of Wilbur and the Moose,” by John Stadler. At the end of her special Morning Meeting, we had a dance party! It was great to get up and move on a rainy day. For a treat after lunch, Caroline shared homemade Rice Krispie Treats. Thank you and Happy Star Day, Caroline!
Wednesday we met Walter Walrus on our trip to Letterland. Walter likes to get wet in the white waves. Watching whales in the salt water is also something Walter likes. He is friends with wolves, wasps, weasels, and the woodpecker.
Since we’ve been talking so much about plants, we thought it would be fun to eat some snacks that are plants. On Thursday, we formed flowers on plates using celery, carrots, cukes and spinach. We talked about the fact that all of these foods are plants or parts of plants. Once the children were satisfied with the results, they enjoyed them for snack. After all, it was Art’s Week at BCD.
- throw away your trash in a bucket, not on the ground
- turn off lights

We will continue to encourage the children to think about what they can do at home and at school to help the Earth.
