Baby animals, Earth Day, Keely’s birthday – these events made for a great week!  We had a wonderful time at Hancock Shaker Village on Wednesday, where the children saw calves, kids, lambs, day-old piglets, chicks, turkeys, and more.  They climbed in and out of pens, petting and feeding the animals.  Then it was off to the Discovery Room, where they had opportunities to weave on a floor loom, “milk” a cow, observe bees making honey, make Shaker crafts, and even try on Shaker clothing.  It was a great trip.  Thank you to our chaperones, Cara, Jennifer C., and Renee.  We had a great time!

On Earth Day, we kept our lights off all day to save energy.  We read books on recycling and talked about how to keep the Earth’s natural resources clean.  We helped to clean up the playground and made Earth Day necklaces too!  We will continue with discussion and activities about how to living a “greener life” for the rest of the year.

Keely turned six on Thursday!  At lunchtime, her mother and grandmother joined us.  Keely and Rochelle read P.D. Eastman’s My Nest is Best to us, and after lunch there were delicious cupcakes and fun goody bags for all.  Thank you, Rochelle and Rosemary, for making Keely’s 6th birthday so special!

One of our math activities this week was the creation of a class graph.  The question we wanted to answer was, “Which taste do you like best – sweet, salty, or sour?”  To answer this, each student ate sweet grapes, salty pretzels, and sour pickles.  After tasting each one, they also brainstormed a vocabulary list of words that described each one.  The results of our tasting graph?  The answer may surprise you – more children preferred sour pickles than anything else!

Speaking about food, in Science the class collected fiddlehead ferns with Ms. Smith.  Ms. Smith came to the room at snack today and helped the children cook them.  Everyone tried them ate them, with almost all loving the taste!

Three upcoming events:

The Kindergarten to Grade 1 Transition Meeting will be held next Wednesday, April 28 at 8:15.  After a brief presentation, Mrs. Frantz will be happy to answer any questions you may have about first grade.

The Kindergarten will be performing in the Music Concert on Friday, May 7, at 1:00.  They’ve been working hard in Music class with Ms. Fishman and are excited to perform!

Last (but not least) is the Kindergarten Poetry Assembly May 14, at 11:00.

Have a great weekend!
