Dear Parents,
The trip to Kimball Farms was wonderful. This is an annual trip that the 2nd graders take as part of our study of compassion.
I commended the children for not only their polite behavior, but how they really listened and engaged in some thoughtful conversations with the residents. I’ll always remember the residents and the class belting out a rousing rendition of Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree with Anyone Else but Me. They shared a recent writing project and asked some questions including, “When you were my age, what was your favorite book? favorite subject? and favorite game at recess?” As you can see from the photos below, the children were fully involved with their assignments and really took to the rocking chairs while waiting for the bus back to school.
In Math we’ve been studying metric measurement, focusing mainly on length. Armed with a single and ten unit cusinaire rod and a string equal to 10 cusinaire rods we looked for 5 things equal to those three measures. When done, then they discovered that the white rod was a centimeter, the ten unit rod a decimeter and that the string was a meter or 100 centimeters long.
In Reading class we are reviewing the 7 syllable types that we have been studying in spelling all year long. With scissors and glue, we categorized the different examples and those will be going home this afternoon.
Play rehearsals are really coming along – what a bunch of hams!
I will finish up the final drafts of the book reports in class on Monday and Tuesday, so they won’t be coming home. Thank you for your help with those. Hope to get them out in the mail by next mid-week.
Best, Katharine
