Dear Families,
How did the year go by so quickly? I thought we would have more time to say goodbye and gather together one last time on Friday. Alas, the weather conspired against us! The children and I shared a lovely last week though, finishing our felted butterflies and getting to release our real butterflies, who magically emerged over the weekend. Before taking them across the street to the Stockbridge Bowl, the children spent time looking at them and drawing what they saw. They also thought of wishes for these creatures that had first come to us as tiny caterpillars:
“I wish they would stay better.”
“I wish they could drive a truck.”
“I wish they could eat sparkles.”
“I wish they could juggle.”
“I wish they could eat a camera and chair and chalk and crayons.”
“I wish they could fly when they were caterpillars.”
“I wish they could come in our houses.”
“I wish they could not die.”
“Yeah, I wish they could come home with me.”
“I wish they could bring a feather in their wing.”
“I wish the butterfly could come home.”
“The chrysalis is all empty.”
“I’m drawing the wings.”
Our woolly butterflies emerged at the same time!
Little butterfly eggs.
A hungry caterpillar.
Walking through the woods to the lake.
The butterflies’ beautiful new home.
“Fly away, butterflies!”
“It’s OK. You can come out.”
“I see his eyes!” “I see his proboscis!”
After the butterflies flew away, we walked back to school and the children rolled down the dandelion hill again and again. We ate popsicles and enjoyed being together. Thank you all for a wonderful year. I am so happy I got to spend it with your children. We learned so much from eachother.
Rolling down the hill!
The Butterfly liberators.
Popsicles round the flagpole.
Whipped cream and berries.
Watching Mr. Gore set off a rocket.
Happy summer, everyone!
Love,
Sarah
