October is a fabulous month.  The class has settled into the rhythm of our week and our days are very productive.  Our butterflies have flown away, and we’ve begun our new unit learning about the human body.  Weaving in and out of all the factual information about our muscles, lungs, heat, and skeleton will be plenty of Halloween fun, stories, and projects.   This is a rich month for poetry, too, and many class favorites make their first appearance in October.

In math, we’ve been working with patterns using unifix cubes.  The class is learning to recognize, extend, create, and record different patterns.  So far we’ve worked on AB, AAB, and AABB.  Each child has begun their own pattern book that will come home at the end of the unit, and will have the opportunity to practice making patterns using a variety of objects.

We also write about Autumn:

Last week we saw a wonderful assembly presented by Laurie Lou.  Using a variety of circus and magic tricks, she taught us all about gravity in a most imaginative way!  I was so sorry that that I didn’t have a camera with me, as the children sat there enthralled, absolutely mesmerized by her performance.  It was really terrific.

Speaking of “terrific,”  well, that’s one of the words that Charlotte spins into her web to describe Wilber the pig.  Charlotte’s Web is a big hit with the class, and all have been enjoying Ms. Smith’s reading at rest time.  We’re nearing the end of the book and will do some writing upon its completion.

We celebrated Ruby’s sixth birthday today!  Joining Ruby in the classroom was her mom, Wendi.  She read a favorite book of Ruby’s (and also a favorite of her dad Mat, when he was a little boy!) called Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire. The class then read a book of birthday wishes that they had written to Ruby.  At lunchtime we shared strawberries and delicious cupcakes.  Thank you, Wendi and Mat, for making Ruby’s birthday so special!

More outside fun:

 Enjoy the long weekend!
