Dear Parents,

In Language Arts and Reading the students have been busy finishing their poem pockets. These pockets house their final drafts of the poems they have chosen to recite for the Poetry Cafe next Friday. They can refer to them anytime they need an assist in memorization. We began creating our ‘Me’ books as well. Along with the ‘me’ box, these books help us learn more about ourselves and each other.

In Math class, cuisnaire rods have ruled the room all week. We’ve been working on deconstructing and then reconstructing the numbers 10 and below. Being able to see numbers in terms of their parts is a great tool for students as they become more facile with numbers.
We also began our Visual Thinking cards in math class. Every Friday we will work with these activity cards that teach us to visualize alternative techniques for arriving at solutions to problems. The drawings of three dimensional objects really engage their spatial perception skills. The children have their own workbooks and work at their own pace as they make their way through the 50 different cards.

Today is International Peace Day and we joined the whole school for an assembly in a celebration and appreciation of peace. We, along with the 1st graders, made a banner decorated with some words meaning peace in other languages. It was very special to have the whole school join together and share outside on this lovely day.

I have some lovely photos and a Voice Thread of the class reading their Hopes and Dreams that can’t seem to make their way to the blog this afternoon but I will persevere next week and get them up as soon as possible.

Lovely weekend to all,

Katharine
