Dear Parents,
We had a wonderful day for Mountain Day after all. Mrs. Malloy organized a great day full of fun, challenges and soon to be, memories. Book marks and leaf rubbings went home in your home/school envelopes today. Attached below is a slide show with some snaps from Mountain Day, Granparents Day, classroom work, our first lunch bunch and our 8th grade helpers during Choice time.
We are getting off to a good start with our study of place value. As with most units in Math we are starting with the more concrete learning, often using hands-on materials; hundreds blocks, tens blocks, cuisinaire rods etc., before we move onto the more abstract. For example today, after some review I used my fingers as digits with different amounts of uni-flex cubes representing different numbers for them to recognize.
Next week I hope to get up to the shop for some Colonial Activites; making tin lanterns and candles. Please send in a rinsed tin can on Monday or Tuesday -(hopefully with out any too sharp edges inside the rim) 6 or 8 oz. is fine. We will turn them into tin lanterns with the help of some hammers, nails, vices and 2nd grade magic!
Even though Halloween isn’t for two weeks, I suspect the subject has already come up at home! The students can bring their costumes in a bag on that Thursday and we will change later that afternoon for the parade. Please, no costumes that include weapons, knives, guns, etc. & keep in mind they will be parading their costumes around the campus so footwear should be considered as well. We will have a small snack and activity at the end of the day before dismissal.
I’ve checked in with the class about the Book Report and so far everyone seems to be on target with completing the book and the report in time. If you sense otherwise at home, let me know and I can intervene with either some class time or a new book if necessary.
Thank you to Stephanie and Wendi for a terrific lunch bunch!
Have a great weekend,
Best,
Katharine
