Earth Day is April 22. Today in the library, we took time out to appreciate the beauty of the BCD campus. Sitting under an oak tree in the courtyard, the fourth graders noted how tree has donned its spring costume, and we enjoyed the warmth of sun as we read Shel Silverstein’s classic story, The Giving Tree. While many of the children have read this story before, our discussion was one that delved beneath the storyline surface. Why is the tree able to be happy as it gives away its apples, then its leaves, then its trunk? Can you be happy with nothign? And what causes people to be so greedy?

We also worked on an Earth Day quilt which will be displayed in the library. Each student created a square that symbolizes our efforts to keep the Earth green.
