Fourth Graders have begun a unit on division concepts. This week we began to explore rules of divisibility. Students explored how a set number of beans might be divided into groups of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Different strategies for this activity emerged; some students used their knowledge of multiplication and its inverse, division, to create the groups. Other students noticed a pattern on sheet that was given to record the data, and were able to make predictions as to how the beans might be divided. Still other students used a tactile/kinesthetic approach by creating groups of beans on the floor to determine if there was a remainder.
