Dear Parents,
I was a very proud teacher on Tuesday morning after the Lower School Assembly celebrating Courage, not just of the 2nd graders but for all the classes. As you know, we read from Dr. King’s I Have A Dream speech. Thanks to Amy Elmore, I have attached a video of it below.
We have begun our study of Mexico in Social Studies class. This week we’ll be making Mexican flags and doing some map work as well. Mrs. Clausen, who traveled to Mexico some years back, will share a slide show of her trip next week. Her trip included a visit to Paricutin, where a volcano did indeed erupt in 1943. She even has some of that volcanic rock to share with the class along with other artifacts. In Reading class we’re currently reading, Hill of Fire, a book of historical fiction retelling the story of this volcanic eruption.
The book reports are coming in and the class is excited to share their work with each other. We will start today and finish up by Monday. I will assign a new one when they return in early April. In Math, we continue to practice telling time as well as more challenging work that computes elapsed time.
Note:Because of parent teacher conferences on Friday, we’re going to have our spelling quiz on Monday.
Whether away or at home, I’m going to have the children do some journal writing over the March break. I will send home a more detailed assignment with them next week and discuss it with them as well. We will also begin journal writing in Reading Class to begin practicing the format and the habit of doing it every day.
I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday and Friday so we can discuss in more detail the hard work, successes and challenges your children undertake each day.
Best, Katharine
