Grade 4

Bonjour!

Bonjour tout le monde! Hello everyone! It is a pleasure to have your children in French class this year. We have gotten off to a great start.

Each class has excelled in establishing a classroom routine and has come to class with a great attitude. The levels of curiosity and cooperation are very encouraging and help to build a positive learning environment. I am truly impressed with your children and their contributions to French class.

Our first few classes included stories and games. For example, “La chenille qui fait des trous” (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) in kindergarten, Loto (bingo) in first and second, and Twister in third. These activities, all in French, helped review the numbers and colors and reinforce previous learning.

The fourth graders have been working on the date and have been practicing greetings through oral activities with their classmates. Sixth grade renewed their nature names, and helped new students (and the new teacher) choose their own nature names- en français!

Eighth and ninth graders have sailed through their review sections and moved right along to the main chapters of their respective books. They also have incorporated some theatre into our French classes, creating dialogues with partners and performing skits in front of the class.

I look forward to meeting the parents of my kindergarten and lower school students this evening. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My email address is gbarlow@berkshirecountryday.org and I can be reached by phone at 413-637-0755 x 137.

Merci et à bientôt !

Welcome to Grade 4 Math!

Grade 4 is off to a busy start in math. It has been only a week, but we have jumped right into to new concepts and skills. Students have been exploring various types of perimeter problems, including straight-up calculations as well as pre-algebraic types in which they are given one side and the perimeter, and thus must calculate the missing sides. We are also discussing strategies for use in word problems including making a model, drawing a picture and using a number sentence. Finally students have been introduced to the concept of an equation, and what a balanced 4th grade equation might look like.

Each class begins with a review of the plan of the class and what our goal for the day is. Next, we review previous concepts and introduce new ideas. Students have the opportunity to then practice the new concept or skill independently. Finally, students who finish early or need enrichment are provided with challenge activities ranging from games and group activities to written puzzles and problems.

Homework is an important part of learning to become more independent in the transition to Middle School. Please check your student’s planner each day with him/her, and use the blog. There will be a little homework most days (except for Wednesdays) but never more than 20-25 minutes, and hopefully much less than that! If your child misses a class, according to the handbook, s/he is responsible for the in-class work, as well as the HW. Finally, if your child would like extra help, please email me so I can be available before school at 7:30.

I’m looking forward to an exciting year in math, as well as to meeting you all in person to further outline the curriculum on Back-to-School Night.

P.E. Classes Outdoors

Welcome back!!!

As we begin our physical education classes in the fall, the weather allows us to be outdoors and have fun using the campus for our activities.  Please provide some proper foot gear for wet grass and changing weather.  A good idea is to leave shorts and maybe another pair of shoes or rubber footwear in school.   We walk the trail, canoe, play up and down the berm, and use many areas that can be wet.

Many thanks,

Gail Heady

After-School Music Lessons at BCD

BCD offers private, after-school music lessons on the BCD campus. Currently, we offer percussion, double bass, electric bass, piano, violin, viola, cello, acoustic guitar, trumpet, trombone, voice, electric guitar, flute, clarinet, recorder and saxophone. We have a fine faculty of musicians who specialize on their instrument and who are experienced teachers. If you are interested in lessons for your child, please contact the instructor directly to discuss scheduling, fees, and any questions you have about lessons.

On Friday, September 5th, several of the instructors will be coming to BCD to talk about their instruments and share some music. Parents are welcomed to drop in and watch the presentations in Fitzpatrick Hall. The LS assembly will take place from 1:40-2:10 and the MS presentation will be from 2:10-2:50.

If you have questions about music lessons or the after-school lesson program, please contact me, Amy Hilliard, via e-mail at ahilliard@berkshirecountryday.org.
