Recently, three qualified and talented educational administrators visited as finalists for the position of Associate Head of School at BCD.  I am excited to announce that Dr. Susan Gebhard, currently the Academic Dean at The Canterbury School (a co-ed independent day school serving over 381 students in Greensboro, NC) will be joining the BCD administration this summer.

Susan’s resume is impressive. During her thirty-two year career in education, she has served in a number of school roles including as an elementary classroom teacher, a reading specialist, a Lower School English and History Department Chair, and as a Head of Lower School.  She has taught at the college level as well, as an Instructor of Education at Slippery Rock University, as an Assistant Professor of Education at The University of North Carolina, and as the Director of Teacher Education and Graduate Studies at Salem College.  She has also been an Instructional Design Consultant in the Greensboro area.

Susan received a B.A. in English and History from Duke University, an M.A.T. in Elementary Education (K-8) from the University of Pittsburgh, and an Ed.D. in Instructional Technology from Duquesne University.  She holds a Professional Certificate (Elementary, K-6; Mid-Level English, 7-9; and Reading Specialist, K-12) from the Commonwealth of PA, and a North Carolina Professional Teaching License (Elementary, K-6; Middle Grade English, 6-9; Secondary English, 9-12; Secondary Social Studies, 9-12, and Reading, K-12).

During Susan’s interview process at BCD, she visited classrooms, met with teachers and administrators, and had discussions with current parents.  Her passion for students and her keen interest in teachers and education was immediately evident to all.  Her energy, articulateness, sense of humor, and vision distinguished her as an outstanding educational leader.  Her breadth of experience with schools and programs, track record of overseeing and coordinating curriculum innovation and development, and demonstrated abilities leading technology initiatives in schools were equally impressive.  It is so very clear that she has a great deal to offer as our new Associate Head of School.

We can all look forward to welcoming Susan and her husband, Doug, a Presbyterian pastor, when they move to the Berkshires this summer.  Meanwhile, if you have any thoughts or questions regarding this new appointment, please speak with me directly.
