Our great visit with the residents at Kimball Farms started with their greeting us at the porch when we arrived on the warm and breezy spring day. The residents and children were scattered along the veranda, sitting side by side in wicker or wheelchairs. Each child read his/her “All About Me” books to their new friend. They interviewed the residents about where they grew up, what they enjoyed in school, and their favorite books. Then, the conversations really began and they learned about teachers, WWII, and world travel. Relationships formed quickly and we shared an unexpected treat of ice cream. Mrs. Hillard was along to direct the children in a few songs. It was a good day! Thanks to Ellen, who generously transported some of our students. The children will share the interviews at our compassion assembly on Tuesday, May 19.
We heard the trill of toads and traveled to the BCD pond, where we found lots of toads mating and producing ribbons of eggs. Alice and her dad brought us some of the very same eggs to observe in the classroom. We watched them grow from eggs to small tadpoles. It took only two days. We will not be able to witness the entire metamorphosis before returning them to the pond. But it has been fun for the kids to run in each morning and check out the tadpoles.
Everyone is busy researching a reptile. They are reading unique descriptions, breeding habits, and about unusual facts. They have five pages of questions to answer. They will present the information to you, along with the dioramas, at our Reptile Museum. The doors will open next Friday, May 22 at 1:30. Be prepared to learn and change your opinions of snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodiles/alligators. They are all working very hard and have learned to research and present as scientists.
Thank you in advance for helping them create the dioramas(small habitat with food source). They are due on Wednesday, May 20.
