This week in the library, Kindergarten cooled off with a visit to scenic Norway. We learned that citizens of this country love the great natural splendor of the coast, the mountains and fjords. Our stories centered around the folkloric theme of trolls, some of the most varied and fascinating creatures of the Norwegian literary landscape. Our first story, The Little Troll by Thomas Berger, is a version of a traditional folktale, and tells the story of a troll that wants to be human (generous and loving). He is shunned by the troll community and eventually through his good deeds and friendship, becomes (nearly) human. Our second story, Butterballis a clever and witty tale from an amazing collection of retellings by Lise Lunge-Larsen, The Troll With No Heart In His Body and Other Tales Of Trolls From Norway. This story has a female troll, a troll hag, as its villain and is filled with twists and turns. Our trip to Norway will continue next week with more troll tales. Happy Reading!
