Our First Days of School

The first days of school are filled with so much excitement, emotion and discovery. Children took the huge step of saying good-bye and entering a new space, getting to know new teachers, friends, routines and materials. There was some sadness, but there was also much laughter, sharing and creativity.

We made new friends.

We found a baby pumpkin growing.

We played in the sand.

We painted pictures and told stories.

Children experienced a morning circle time, learning each other’s names and several new songs about Farmer Brown’s apples, floating down the river, feathers in the road and a little turtle named Tim.  We were so proud of the children’s ability to listen, repeat and move with such expressiveness to these new stories!

In the coming weeks we will share more about ourselves. Zora had the chance to pass a shell around the circle and told us she found it in the sand this summer.  We noticed it was hard and smooth.  Someone saw swirly circles and a place inside that was pink where someone might have lived.  We held the shell to our ears and heard,

“Shh, shh, shh. Like it’s saying, ’Shh,’ like the water.”

We will also be studying feathers.  Children listened to the book Feathers for Lunch and sang a song about a mysterious feather dropped on a road. They examined real feathers and began coloring their own feathery shapes with oil pastels in earthy colors. Look for them as they will be fluttering soon from the branches in our room.

“Fluttering means, ‘fl, fl, fl,’ down. Like flying and falling down.”

We are so excited for all the wonderful opportunities this year holds and are so honored to be sharing this time with your children!

All the best,
