Dear Families,

Grandparent Day was really something special! The children had a music lesson with Ms. Hilliard and she came to the room so that the guests would not have to change rooms. She had grandparents and students singing and moving like trees of the seasons. There were older trees and young saplings all over the room. It was delightful! Then the children interviewed their special guest. They asked three questions, “What was first grade like for you?” and “What did you like to do for fun after school?” and “What do you like to do with me when I visit?”. The children will take the interviews and make books. It is a chance to compare then and now and get a look at personal history. Grandparents and children had lunch together and then we all listened to the Lower School children sing in the gymnasium. The sun was shining and everyone was smiling. Thank you to all the parents who worked behind the scenes to make this event such a success.

Your children are reading and writing every day. The book bags seem to be helpful. I know that books are read and children are excited to get another book to take home. I hope you are able to be as proud as they are as they leap into literacy.

In math they are learning how to make sums of 10. We use a ten frame, cubes, chips, and a card game to practice. They are learning the symbols + and =. We are starting addition and subtraction.

We peeled an apple, measured the circumference and weighed it in ounces. Then we soaked them in salt water and took them out to dry. We measured and weighed them again a week later. The words the children used to describe the changes were; wrinkled, smaller, lighter, brown, bumpy, smelly, and dryer. We are discovering that the water/juice in the apple is evaporating and is now in our room as water vapor. Eventually we will take these dried, wrinkled apples and make apple head dolls.

Wednesday is Lunch Bunch and I believe the menu is Mac & Cheese. Your child will need only a snack on that day.

Thursday is the annual Mountain Day! We will be leaving campus at 10:00 to hike Kennedy Park with the students of Lower School. We will have a picnic lunch at the top. Please make sure your child has a picnic lunch and wears long pants and hiking shoes or sneakers. We will have snack before we leave.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend with family.

Fondly,
Ms. Milani
