It’s been so cold outside, but we’ve been almost too busy to notice! Since we returned from vacation, the class has had two “mini” units. Last week we focused on snow and snowflakes by looking at amazing photographs of snow crystals as well as starting to learn some great winter poetry by Robert Frost and A.A. Milne. This week we turned our focus to Martin Luther King, Jr., learning about his life and work. We also read books about Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges. Discussion topics included the courage they had in facing injustice and the work they did to try and change it. The class also discussed times when they had to be courageous, and wrote about the kind of world they want to see when they’re older. These thoughtful writings are up on our bulletin boards; come and take a look!
Next week we will begin a more lengthy study of the penguins that live in Antarctica. This is always a great unit, with lots of activities, projects, books, and poems! Stay tuned for more details once we begin.
We’ve connected with other students, young and old, these last two weeks. Pajama Day with Preschool was a delight, and we had so much fun that we had a playtime mixer with them again yesterday.
Today, we had an impromptu mixer when the first grade came over to spend a period with us. And we now have new ninth graders who come and help out every Monday.
