Preschool Explores the Animal World with Leo Lionni

Captivating preschoolers with his brilliant collages, four-time Caldecott Honor Book winner Leo Lionni artfully weaves animal stories with human relationships. Today in the library, we read three of Lionni’s works: Swimmy, Fish is Fish and Matthew’s Dream. Told from the animals’ points of view, these stories center around friendships, hopes and dreams–all themes that connect directly to the BCD Preschool curriculum and goals of Responsive Classroom. Later, when Mrs. Atwater joined us for browsing and check-out time, she and I celebrated the changing of the seasons and months by leading a rousing version of Maurice Sendak’s Chicken Soup with Rice.  Library books are due on October 15.

Happy Reading!

Kindergarten Discovers the Beauty of Green

This week in the library, Kindergartners marveled in the tale of Verdi, by Janell Cannon, creator of the beloved Stella Luna.

Verdi is a young python who revels in his youth and his sporty yellow stripes. His free-spirited nature not only leads him to perform death-defying acrobatics, but also to question his older, wiser and GREEN python peers, Umbles, Aggie and Ribbon. Cannon’s acrylic and color-pencil illustrations help to shape a tale that is captivating, easy to relate to and touch upon our own apprehensions of growing older (and wiser!).  Scaffolding up on this slithery story, we looked at two non-fiction companions about snakes and learned about fangs and venom

, and noticed how when skins shed their skin, a new colored skin may emerge. Lastly, we made paper snakes to hang in the library. Students also checked out books to take home that are due back on October 15. Happy Reading!

NEWS

Rehearsals are moving swiftly along for both one-acts. Actors need to learn their lines ASAP and may need assistance from parents, friends, etc. The sooner they are ‘offbook’, the more fun and more productive rehearsals will be.
We are seeking a couple of items for the plays. If you can lend any of the following, please contact Doria Pollinger or me:

Louis IV couch, two chairs, ornate gold painting frames (empty), a 10′ round antique-looking rug, a table that might be in a 19th century Russian home and two chairs.

THANKS!
