Kindergarten’s Indian Odyssey

Today, I greeted the Kindergarten class draped in a beautiful silk sari (thank you Sue Murali–mother of PreK’s Devan) to begin our Indian adventure. After locating the United States and India on the globe, we looked at some photos of Indian children, learned that Hindi is the main language and that India is one of the most populous countries on Earth. Folktales were the genre du jour today, as we shared three animal folktales from Virginia Haviland’s collection: Favorite Fairy Tales Told in India: The Little Jackals and the Lion; The Cat and the Parrot; and The Alligator and the Jackal. Next week, our Indian exploration will continue with a special visitor. We concluded with book browsing and checkout. Happy Reading!

Kindergarten Visits with Mr. Putter and Tabby

It was lively in the library today as Kindergarten met the acquaintance of Mr. Putter and his cat, Tabby. In award-winning author Cynthia Rylant’s Mr. Putter series, there is always an adventure ahead for Mr. Putter, Tabby, their beloved neighbor Mrs. Teaberry and her mischevious dog, Zeke. In Mr. Putter and Tabby Catch A Cold, Mr. Putter is nursed back to health by Zeke who shuttles back and forth from Mrs. Teaberry’s to Mr. Putter’s bearing the tried remedies of soup and peppermint tea with honey in thermoses on his back. In Mr. Putter and Tabby Walk the Dog, Mr. Putter is left to dog-sit Zeke and must think of creative ways to get him to behave. Apparently, Zeke loves a hot-fudge sundae with extra cherries…and in Mr. Putter and Tabby Feed the Fish, we learn that fish make Tabby very twitchy with excitement. So much so, that despite Mr. Putter’s attempts to protect the fish (pillowcase and bucket), Tabby cannot control herself and the fish are happily adopted by Mrs. Teaberry. Her dog, Zeke, has no such reaction to goldfish. There are many, many more books in this delightful set of short chapter books and Kindergarten was howling at the antics of these lovable characters. We concluded with book browsing and check out. Happy Reading!

Three Cheers for Tacky the Penguin

KIndergarten extended its penguin study today to the library where we shared the adventures of Tacky the Penguin. Helen Lester’s series unfolds the trials and tribulations of a non-conformist penguin named Tacky. Tacky’s peers (aptly named Lovely, Neatly, Angel, Goodly and Perfect) are model penguins who march, dress, splash and slide with appropriate consistency. In many of the Tacky tales, however, these penguin pets find themselves in a sticky situation, from which Tacky, and only Tacky, is able to extract them. Three Cheers for Tacky finds the penguin gang in a cheering competition for the coveted shiny blue bowtie prize. A companion book, Tacky in Trouble, highlights Tacky’s eccentricities as positive attributes. The Tacky books can be found in many libraries, bookstores and on-line and all of them showcase the themes of teamwork, friendship and above all, respecting and marveling in our differences. We concluded with book browsing and checkout. Happy Reading!

Phonics Fun with the K-Kids

Today in the library, the Kindergarten had fun with phonics. While listening to our stories today, students were coloring in their personal giant Bingo boards. We then used words from the story as clues for our bingo game, focusing on word-initial consonants. (For example, “Cover the picture on your board that starts with the b-b-b sound.”) Many of the students were able to fill their entire boards by connecting sounds with the pictures. We concluded with book browsing and check out with books due on 12/1/10. Happy Reading!
