Kindergarten’s Icy Penguin Adventure

Today in the library, we brought our collection of stuffed penguins and had a penguin snuggle read! After each child got a penguin buddy, we shared Brenda Guiberson’s non-fiction picture book, The Emperor Lays An Egg

. With artfully collaged illustrations by Joan Paley, this story describes the tag-team efforts of Emperor Penguin parents in raising their children. Each student also received a penguin coloring book to take home. We concluded with book browsing and checkout. Happy Reading!

We’re been busy!

Here are some of the highlights of the past two weeks!

Our biggest news has been the launch of our new Writing Workshop program.  A few weeks ago, I attended an excellent workshop on Albany which focused on the writing process, specifically geared for young writers.  I was so excited by it I had to begin it with the children the following Monday.   Their first books are based on author-illustrator craft studies (think Eric Carle, Don Freeman, Jan Brett…)  The children are extremely motivated and are doing a great job so far.  We’ll continue with this kind of writing when we return in January.  Below are some photos from Writing Workshop:

Over the last two weeks, we’ve also read books about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas.  Our bulletin board reflects projects from all their mini-studies – Hanukkah menorahs, kinaras used at Kwanzaa, and couldn’t-be-any-cuter Chrismas reindeer.  These will be up through the first week of the new year, so come and take a look.

Everett turned six years old, and joining him for his classroom celebration were his parents as well as second-grade sibs, Esme and Eli.  We heard two great books and enjoyed a treat together afterwards.  Thank you all for making Everett’s birthday so special.

We finished (just today) learning how to write our last uppercase letter.  When we return from break, we’ll begin lowercase formation.  In math we continue to review number formation, continue to work on increasing our number sense, are doing addition problems in our heads, and finally, each child is learning to memorize his or her own phone number.

We had a great lunch bunch last week.  Thank you to the Benson and Scheible/Hanley family for a delicious meal.  The class really enjoyed it!  And while we’re on the subject of food, we had a fun holiday party today.  Thank you to all parents who sent in food, and an especially big thank you to those who came in and helped.  It was a great success.

I hope you all have a wonderful break.  See you in 2013!

Kindergarten Goes Fishing

This week in the library, Kindergarteners explored books on the topic of friendship. Our favorite tale of the week is Fishing for Methusaleh by Roger Roth. In this story, two old friends who are constantly competing and bickering with one another, Olaf and Ivan, decide to compete in an ice fishing contest to catch the legendary fish, Methusaleh, who lurks below the local lake. Neither man has ever seen the fish, but in the end, they both put their differences aside and catch a glimpse of Methusaleh’s magic. Students also enjoyed coloring in velvet drawings of fish, in addition to book browsing and checkout. Happy Reading!

Peace and Cooperation

“Have a peaceful day” was how we greeted each other this morning.  Our new unit on Peace and Peacemakers has just begun, and this month we’ll focus on ways to make our classroom, our families, and our world more peaceful.  Our room has an excellent collection of books and today we had a good discussion about this big and important topic.  In addition, this month we’ll spend time learning about the holidays of Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas, make some special gifts for some special people, and learn some new poems and songs.

Speaking of music, Mozart had a featured place in our class this week.  Over the course of several days, we listened to two piano concertos at lunchtime.  And today we began to learn the round “Dona Nobis Pacem” (I even managed to find my recorder to play it for the children!)  The children’s openness to all sorts of music, art, literature – even those with themes of inequality or sadness – adds such richness to our experience together.

The class has been working hard on handwriting.  On Monday we’ll finish all the numerals, and we’re almost done with the second group of uppercase letters, the Starting Corner capitals (H K L U V W X Y Z).  The children’s handwriting is looking good these days – very few reversals and their letters are beginning to become quite uniform in size.  They’re working hard and the results show much progress.

Cooperation has also been a big topic lately.  Along with reading many books together and having excellent discussions about them, Kindergarten has been trying hard to put into practice what they know to be good choices.  (Cooperation is one of three, broad units in our values curriculum.  Courage and Compassion will round out the year.)  The mural that the class made for our cooperation assembly (which had been on display in the room) has been disassembled and today each child brought home their piece of it.

Our annual Friendship Lunch, held just before Thanksgiving Soup, was one example where Preschool and Kindergarten cooperated together to create a fine meal.  The day before our meal, teams of children all helped make homemade butter, cornbread, cookies, and placemats.  We all enjoyed it!

We also had a wonderful Lunch Bunch last week.  Many thanks to Elizabeth Weinberg and Stephanie Buchanan for coming in and serving “Pasta Anyway-You-Like-It” – the catering can’t get much better than that!   With veggies and brownies to round it out, it was a meal that all enjoyed.  Thank you again!

Holiday Gifts are due back next week, and so are the book orders.  Lunch Bunch on Tuesday.  And don’t forget to visit the Holiday Book Fair, too – they’ll have some great gift ideas for all members of the family.
