Third Grade Visits Shakespeare’s Globe Theater

Third Grade took a virtual visit to Shakespeare’s Globe in the library this week. A specially prepared Powerpoint presentation unfolded the history and legacy of the world’s most famous playwright and writer. Students learned about Elizabethan times and some of the special contributions to the English language made by William Shakespeare. Did you know Shakespeare coined more than 1700 words including bloody, countless, frugal, amazement, clever anddislocate? We also began to explore two of Shakespeare’s plays, Macbeth and The Tempest. I look forward to continuing our Shakespeare Exploration next week!

Third Grade Views A New Side Of Suess!

Today Third Graders viewed a new side of our old friend, Dr. Suess (whose birthday is celebrated this week). My Suessian experts recalled that Suess stories tend to have colorful pictures, made up words and characters and RHYME! Today, we shared one of Suess’ less familiar stories for older readers, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. Bartholomew Cubbins is plagued by hats—when he takes one off to show respect for his King, Derwin, a new one appears. This continues to happen, and of course, the King is outraged and calls for his hat experts, wise men and magicians to help rid the kingdom of the constantly appearing hats. With a surprise ending, and humor abound, this story delights students and adults of all ages. We concluded with book browsing and check out. Happy Reading!

Third Grade Celebrates Wilhelm Grimm’s Birthday with a Skit on the Spot

Third Grade marked the birthday of Wilhelm Grimm by performing an original Skit on the Spot. In this modern-day version of Cinderella, (one of the hundreds of stories collected and transcribed by the Grimm brothers), Cinderella’s sisters and stepmother keep her busy by fetching lattes and doing their nails, while the Prince desperately tries to locate the owner of the missing shoe by email.

Students also learned about the history of the Grimm brothers, Jakob and Wilhelm who were by training and interest, linguists who studied language change (Wilhelm was also a professor and librarian!) and even compiled a German dictionary. The Grimm brothers embarked on a huge folkloric endeavor, collecting hundreds of folk and fairy tales by interviewing people in their homes during the beginning of the 19th century, and transcribing the tales. Later the tales were published and many are still widely read today including versions of Snow White, Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty.

We also noted how oral tales are distinct from written ones in that each person tells a story a little differently. This creates many different variants of a single tale. Students also came up with their own endings for our skit, and shared them.

We concluded with book browsing and checkout. Happy Reading!

Third Grade’s New Perspective on India

Third Graders visiting the library today continued on their Indian journey by sharing the classic story, Rikki Tikki Tavi. Written by Nobel Prize-winning author, Rudyard Kipling, this adventure story unfolds with the friendship between a fearless young mongoose and a boy, Teddy. While the tale highlights the bravery and loyalty of these unlikely friends, the harsh reality of the Indian landscape yields a deeper understanding of this country. We concluded with book browsing and checkout. Third Grade has many overdue books! Please check your shelves and return any library books to BCD. Thanks, and happy reading!
