First Grade’s Passport Adventure to Brazil!

First Grade visiting the library this week embarked on the first of their passport adventures for the year: Brazil! We began by learning a bit about the 5th largest country in the world and the largest in South America. Our literary adventure contained two stories today. The first, a famous Brazilian Folktale called The Dancing Turtle. In this adaptation by West Coast author Pleasant DeSpain, the dancing turtle tells a lie in order to preserve his life. The students shared their thoughts on lying and in what circumstances a lie might be justified. In our second story, Suddenly in Brazil, author Cristina Falcon Maldonato, brings the magic of Brazil alive in this tour-de-mystery tale. This book describes many important and exciting destinations within the country including Iguazu Falls, Copacobana Beach, Chapada Diamantina Park and Bahia. We concluded by stamping our passports and placing the South America sticker in its place. Happy Reading!

First Grade Meets A New Friend

First Graders visiting the library this week met a new friend, Stuart, who is a third grader at Punbury Elementary School. Stuart is very proud of his homemade magic cape which not only leads him into some crazy adventures, but also into a few mishaps as well. Sara Pennypacker’s, Stuart Goes to School, is full of laughs and surprises. Next week’s library class will lead us to the conclusion of this short novel. Students have all checked out books which should be returned by the end of the month. Happy Reading!

This week, First Grade began their library journey by exploring our library routine. We begin by singing the library song, choosing meerkat helpers in the burrow, and then sharing a story. Our first share was Kate DiCamillo’s book, Louise: The Adventures of A Chicken, in which an ordinary hen has some extraordinary adventures. In addition to participating in a pirate raid, surviving a storm at sea and joining the circus, Louise is able to elude a voraciously hungry lion, see free her chicken colleagues from chicken prison and manages to find her way back to the henhouse. We concluded by creating our own Louise adventures including: an attack by a giant squid (Gabriel), going to the library (Hannah) and surviving a triceratops attack (Patrick). Stay tuned for more adventures in first grade library. Book browsing and checkout will begin next week.

First Grade Troll Invasion!

First Grade continued on its trip to Norway today with a closer look at trolls. We shared several troll stories from The Troll with No Heart in His Body and Other Tales of Trolls from Norway, including The Eating Competition and The Boy and The North Wind. While listening to stories, first graders created their own trolls, crafting them from corks of different shapes and sizes, fabric, felt and beads. Special thanks to Aurora’s dad, Jim Benson, for collecting 100 corks for us! Come check out our assortment of troll kings, troll hags, troll hippies and troll treasure in the library! Happy Reading!
