Kindergarten

Highlights of the last two weeks

We’ve been so busy, with Lower School Mountain Day, Trip to Ioka Valley Farm, Lunch Bunch, and Grandparents and Grand Friends Day all taking place in the last two weeks!

Mountain Day was a huge amount of fun.  With the weather cooperating, Kindergarten hiked to the top of Kennedy Park.  There they played games and made nature crafts alongside their Lower School friends.  We enjoyed a picnic lunch and then hiked back down.  Kindergarten did a great job setting the pace on the way back and there were some very tired – but very happy – hikers upon our return.

We had our first Lunch Bunch last week.   The class really enjoyed it, and the next day many children asked me if we were having another one right then!  Many thanks to Stephen, Wendi, and Kate for preparing a great meal – it was delicious.

Today we had a beloved BCD tradition – Grandparents and Special Friends Day.  Earlier in the week, the kindergarten had written and drawn some of the favorite activities that they do with their grandparents.  We made it into a book and read it aloud.  We also recited four of our favorite poems and everyone created beautiful necklaces out of beads and Sculpey hearts that the children made.  It was a wonderful end to a wonderful week!

And finally, last week we journeyed to Ioka Valley Farm with our PreK friends.  There we enjoyed picking pumpkins, and had fun on a hay ride, feeding the goats and other animals, riding pedal-style go-carts, and going down the most awesome slide ever (a long PVC pipe!)  Thank you to our chaperones, Kate and Emily, for accompanying us on this fun trip.  Autumn is so much fun!

Kindergarten Explores Themes of Diversity and Peace

“Heritage is our line of communication to the past and our map for navigating the future.” Roosevelt Holman

Today in the library, Kindergarten explored the themes of diversity and peace. We began by sharing the book, We All Have A Heritage by Sandy Holman, a advocate for pluralistic education. With beautiful illustrations by Georgian artist Lela Kometiani, this book artfully weaves the cultural aspects of language, clothing, music and other traditions with the singular message that learning about our differences enables us to better respect each other. Scaffolding upon this theme, we read Can You Say Peace, a folk-art style book which takes us on a linguistic journey through different countries. We learned to say “peace”in Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Farsi and several other languages, and discussed what peace means to each of us. What does peace mean to you?
Please return library books so that the students can check out new ones. Happy Reading!

Kindergarten’s Passport Adventure to Brazil

Kindergarten students visiting the library this week embarked on the first of their passport adventures for the year: Brazil! We began by learning a bit about the 5th largest country in the world and the largest in South America. Our literary adventure contained two stories today. The first, a famous Brazilian Folktale called The Dancing Turtle. In this adaptation by West Coast author Pleasant DeSpain, the dancing turtle tells a lie in order to preserve his life. The students shared their thoughts on lying and in what circumstances a lie might be justified. In our second story, author Janell Cannon (of Stellaluna fame!) waves the tale of Verdi, a rainforest snake and his journey to discover his own uniqueness. WE concluded by making our own rainforest anacondas. Please be sure to bring in your library books so that we may check out new ones. Happy Reading!

Springtime In Norway!

This week in the library, Kindergarten cooled off with a visit to scenic Norway. We learned that citizens of this country love the great natural splendor of the coast, the mountains and fjords. Our stories centered around the folkloric theme of trolls, some of the most varied and fascinating creatures of the Norwegian literary landscape. Our first story, The Little Troll

by Thomas Berger, is a version of a traditional folktale, and tells the story of a troll that wants to be human (generous and loving). He is shunned by the troll community and eventually through his good deeds and friendship, becomes (nearly) human. Our second story, Butterballis a clever and witty tale from an amazing collection of retellings by Lise Lunge-Larsen, The Troll With No Heart In His Body and Other Tales Of Trolls From Norway. This story has a female troll, a troll hag, as its villain and is filled with twists and turns. Our trip to Norway will continue next week with more troll tales. Happy Reading!
