Parenting_and_Technology (1)The BCD Parents’ Association and the Berkshire Hills Regional School District are pleased to present an evening with Marje Monroe and Doug Fodeman, nationally recognized experts in the area of Internet safety. Come hear them speak on Wednesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in Fitzpatrick Hall about the latest issues and concerns about our children’s use of the Internet and cell phones, as well as hear specific strategies to help parents deal with these concerns.

Co-Directors of ChildrenOnline.org since 1997 and co-authors of several books and many articles on the topic of Internet safety, Marje and Doug have conducted research on the Internet and cell phone behavior of thousands of children around the United States.  They have spoken about Internet and cell phone safety issues on the CBS Evening News, ABC’s World News Tonight and many radio stations such as WBZ Radio, to name just a few appearances. They have given workshops to parents, students, teachers, and administrators at dozens of schools across the United States during the last seventeen years.

Great articles, books, and documentaries about children engaging with social media abound.  Some that I have come across recently include:

PBS’s Frontline – “Generation Like” http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/generation-like/

Author Douglas Rushkoff http://www.rushkoff.com/

Author Danah Boyd http://www.salon.com/2014/02/23/stop_freaking_out_parents_social_media_isnt_the_problem/?source=newsletter

Next Wednesday’s event is free and open to the public. This is an event for adults.  See you March 5 at 7 p.m. in Fitzpatrick Hall!

And, please join me in thanking our PA and committee members Stephanie Iverson, Courtney McDonnell, and Wendy O’Neil for all of their work in making this year’s Lecture and Salon series a success.
