Dear Parents,

We have been exploring creating lines of symmetry in Math class. Using plastic mirrors the class was able to create all sorts of symmetrical shapes from one block design. (See photos below.) This hands-on, concrete activity makes for a much easier transition to the more abstract step of of seeing and dividing shapes with one or more lines of symmetry. We even had one student correctly spell symmetry as a bonus word on this week’s spelling quiz.

We haven’t had a spelling unit this week, (too busy, too short) but will have the aw, au words next week. They’ll be posted shortly on Spelling City. Cursive got off to a good start last week. The students seem ready and excited to start connecting their letters.

We are working hard to complete our Mexican Codices in time for the Fiesta next week, however I don’t want to rush too much. I assured the class they should do their best work at their own rate and they can share what’s been completed next week.

Congratulations to Kate and Allison who found the 36 triangles in this week’s homework and to everyone who found more than 16!
