Dear Parents,

Just a couple of items before we all embark on our long weekend ahead.

Although the rough draft letters for the book reports are not due until May 13th, this would be a great weekend to encourage as much reading of the book as possible.

The Spelling quiz on soft c/g words is postponed until next Wednesday. The words are currently posted on Spelling City and that might be another activity this weekend if time permits.

Our new handwriting program, Handwriting without Tears, allows the children to be introduced to cursive now, at the end of their 2nd grade year. This cursive is more like connected printing, easier to read, write (and teach!) than older cursive that called for lots of loops and curlicues. We will begin our new book next week and the class is very excited about it. They will continue more cursive practice next year in 3rd grade.

We’re still beginning to gather information for our reports on Mexican culture. We had a wonderful visit from Senora Velez, who teaches Spanish in the Middle/Upper school, last week and she taught the class some Spanish songs and games.

Class trip to Mass MoCa is set for next Friday the 25th. I will send home a reminder notice this week. Books, stuffed animals, etc. are fine for the bus ride, but please, no electronic games.

The Fiesta is also still set for the following Friday, May 2nd and all parents and family friends are invited. If the children have any Mexican costume they want to wear for that day, please feel free for them to wear it or send it in for a change – it’s not necessary but can be fun. I will be doing a Pinata with them probably the following Monday the 5th for Cinco de Mayo.

Best to you all for a wonderful weekend,

Katharine
