Conceptual Drawing with Dana Piazza

“When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution in a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” – Sol LeWitt

Winter Arts Block Heats Up!

The Art Studios are alive with creative energy! Upper School students are exploring all kinds of mediums and processes through vastly different offerings this term. Ben Evans’ “Focus on Function” ceramics class uses functional tableware styles from around the world to inspire students to create their own pieces with hand building and wheel-working techniques. Color theory is the focus of Max Spitzer’s painting class which is followed by his sculpture class that centers around mold-making and plaster work. New teaching artist Dana Piazza (‘o6 BCD2S) leads “Conceptual Drawing” where students are using Sumi inks and special drawing tools to create abstract drawings driven by self-authored instructions.

Check out our artists in action!

5th Grade Explores the Art of Fused Glass

For their final project of the term, 5th Grade students learned about glass, its properties, and the many ways this medium can be sculpted, blown, molded, slumped, and poured. In particular, we studied the fundamentals of glass fusing, the technique used to join glass pieces together by partly melting it at a high temperature.

It was exciting to explore this new process, a first for BCD students! Check out the results of our project below!
